A pool acid wash in Los Angeles brings back dull, stained plaster by draining the pool and washing the walls and floor with diluted acid. It works because a thin layer of the surface comes off along with the stains (Source: Leslie's).

That is also why we never recommend it casually. Every wash takes some plaster with it, and Leslie's notes there is a limit on how many times a pool can be acid washed. Before quoting, we look at the plaster, the type of staining and the pool's history, then tell you plainly whether an acid wash is the right tool.

What's Included in Our Pool Acid Wash

  • Assessment first. We identify whether stains are organic, metal or mineral and check that the plaster is sound enough to wash.
  • A legal drain. Water goes only to a discharge point local rules allow, treated as those rules require.
  • Sectioned acid wash. Walls and floor are washed in small sections and rinsed promptly so no area is etched longer than needed.
  • Neutralized rinse water. Acid rinse water is neutralized before it is pumped out, never sent down the gutter.
  • Refill and start-up. We refill promptly, balance the fresh water and brush the exposed surface through its first weeks.

Signs Your Pool May Need an Acid Wash

An acid wash helps when the problem sits on the surface of sound plaster:

  • Widespread discoloration that brushing and balanced water have not improved.
  • Gray, brown or green blotches left after a green pool cleanup.
  • Rough white calcium scale across the plaster, not just at the waterline.
  • Mineral staining around steps, returns or fittings.

It does not help when plaster is thin, cracked, delaminating or pitted down to the base coat, and washing can make those problems worse. The National Plasterers Council says pool plaster can last up to 20 years with proper care (Source: National Plasterers Council). A surface that is already worn through may need resurfacing, and an acid wash is not a substitute for it.

Our Pool Acid Wash Process

  1. Assess and planWe confirm the plaster is sound and plan the drain route and timing around recent rain.
  2. Drain the poolIn the City of Los Angeles, dechlorinated or debrominated pool water is on the conditionally exempt list for the storm drain system (Source: Los Angeles Municipal Code). In unincorporated LA County, the sewer route needs a permitted 3-inch P-trap and excludes salt water pools (Source: LA County Public Works).
  3. Wash in sectionsWe wet the surface, apply diluted acid a section at a time, watch the reaction and rinse promptly.
  4. Neutralize and clean upRinse water gathered in the deep end is neutralized and pumped out, and the floor is rinsed clean.
  5. Refill and start upWe refill as soon as the wash is done, set alkalinity and pH first, brush off residue and bring chlorine and calcium up in steps.

An empty pool carries risk of its own. When groundwater around the shell is high, such as after heavy rain, hydrostatic pressure can push an empty pool upward, so we check conditions first and keep the pool empty no longer than needed. The National Plasterers Council also recommends that a plaster finish remain fully submersed during its service life, except for limited servicing or repair (Source: National Plasterers Council).

Acid Wash vs Other Stain Treatments Compared

OptionBest forTrade-offs
Brushing and water balanceLight, recent dullnessSlow, and will not lift set-in scale or old algae marks
In-water stain treatmentIsolated metal or organic stainsNo drain needed, but it does not brighten overall dullness
Tile and calcium cleaningScale on the waterline tileTreats tile, not the plaster below it
Acid washWidespread stains or scale on sound plasterRemoves a thin layer of plaster, needs a full drain and cannot be repeated indefinitely

If the water itself is worn out, timing helps. The EPA says a well-maintained pool should only need to be drained every 3 to 7 years to keep TDS levels down (Source: U.S. EPA WaterSense). When you are due for a drain and refill anyway, pairing it with an acid wash avoids draining twice.

What Affects the Cost of a Pool Acid Wash

  • Pool size and depth. More surface to wash and more water to move.
  • Stain type and severity. Heavy scale or metal staining takes longer than light discoloration.
  • Drain route. Distance to an allowed discharge point and any dechlorination hold affect the schedule.
  • Attached spa. A spa adds surface area and a second body of water.

We look at the pool before quoting, because photos rarely show whether plaster is sound. For a pool acid wash in Los Angeles, call (877) 720-8124 for a free quote. You can also learn about our owner-operated company or browse all of our pool services.

Pool Acid Wash in Los Angeles: Local Factors

Water rules shape any acid wash here, because the pool has to be refilled. The City of Los Angeles is currently in Phase 2 of its water conservation ordinance (Source: LADWP), but LADWP's shortage plan requires covering residential pools in Phase 4 and prohibits filling them in Phase 5 (Source: LADWP), so we confirm the current phase before draining. Hard water across much of the county also means scale returns quickly unless the refill is balanced for calcium from the start.

Why choose us

Why LA Homeowners Choose Us for a Pool Acid Wash

0 unneeded washes

We Tell You When Not to Acid Wash

Because each wash removes some plaster, the most useful answer is sometimes no. Your plaster only gets so many washes. If brushing, a stain treatment or a tile cleaning will solve the problem, we recommend that instead. If the plaster is too far gone for a wash to help, we say so plainly rather than sell you a job that will not last.

5 days to dechlorinate

Drained the Right Way

A clean surface is only half the job; the water has to go somewhere legal. We plan the route before the pump starts and dechlorinate where the discharge requires it. LA County Public Works accepts letting pool water stand five days with no added chlorine as one method (Source: LA County Public Works). We also keep acid rinse water and filter backwash out of the street.

6 readings after refill

A Careful Start-Up After the Refill

Freshly washed plaster needs attention in its first weeks back underwater. After the refill we brush, balance and text you a photo and six readings after every visit. Our owner does the work personally, we are licensed and insured, and follow-up service runs month to month with no contract. Balanced water from the start also slows the return of stains and scale.

FAQ

Pool Acid Wash FAQ

How often can a pool be acid washed?

There is no safe fixed schedule. Each wash removes a thin layer of plaster, so the number of washes a surface can take is limited. We recommend one only when stains or scale cannot be removed another way.

Will an acid wash fix rough or cracked plaster?

No. An acid wash cleans the surface; it does not rebuild it. Plaster that is rough, cracked, delaminating or worn thin may need resurfacing, and washing it can make matters worse.

Can a saltwater pool be acid washed?

The plaster can be washed the same way, but draining is different. In unincorporated LA County, the sewer P-trap discharge option excludes salt water pools, so we confirm an allowed route for your water before starting.

Is it safe to leave my pool empty?

Only briefly. An empty pool can be lifted by groundwater pressure after heavy rain or where the water table is high, and exposed plaster can dry out and crack. We check conditions first and refill promptly.
