Pool ash and debris cleanup in Los Angeles is its own kind of job, because what lands in the water after a fire, a windstorm or a heavy rain does more than look dirty. Ash shifts the chemistry, fine particles pack into the filter, and leaves and mud eat up chlorine.

Stay out of the water until it is cleaned. The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance says no one should swim in a pool in the immediate aftermath of a fire. (Source: PHTA) LA County Public Health says to reopen a fire-affected pool only when pH is 7.2 to 8.0 and free chlorine is at least 2.0 ppm. (Source: LA County Public Health)

What's Included in Pool Ash and Debris Cleanup

  • Surface, floor and baskets. Floating ash and leaves skimmed, the settled layer vacuumed slowly, skimmer and pump baskets emptied.
  • Filter teardown. Ash from burned structures can leave a limestone-like cement coating on filter media, so we clean cartridges, grids or sand as often as needed. (Source: PHTA) See our pool filter cleaning service.
  • Equipment check. Pump, motor, heater and cleaner inspected for ash, heat or wind damage, with fixes through our pool equipment repair service.
  • Chemistry reset. pH, alkalinity, chlorine and phosphates brought back in range, with a photo and readings texted after each visit.

Signs You Need Ash or Debris Cleanup

  • A gray film on the surface or a gray layer on the floor
  • Cloudy water, or a pH reading that keeps climbing
  • Filter pressure rising fast and weak flow at the returns
  • Palm fronds, branches and leaves after a Santa Ana night
  • Brown water after runoff from a slope or planter

Federal geologists testing Southern California ash from burned homes measured pH levels of 12.5 to 12.7. (Source: USGS) As that ash dissolves, chlorine weakens and calcium can drop out as scale. Fire retardant and storm runoff add phosphates and fertilizer, which feed algae.

Our Ash and Debris Cleanup Process

  1. Check power and equipmentOn fire-damaged properties, breakers stay off until the fire department clears them. Elsewhere, we check baskets and filter pressure before running the pump.
  2. Skim while it floatsMuch of the ash repels water, so we net it off before it sinks.
  3. Brush and vacuum slowlyFine ash is captured instead of stirred back up.
  4. Clean the filter repeatedlyHeavy loads mean several cleanings. Backwash water goes to the sanitary sewer only, never the street or storm drain.
  5. Oxidize and rebalanceWe lower pH, set alkalinity and raise chlorine, adding a clarifier when fine ash will not settle.
  6. RecheckAsh keeps washing off roofs and decks for days, so we retest until the readings hold.

Staying Safe Around Pool Ash

Treat ash as a skin and lung irritant. The EPA warns that contact with wet ash can cause chemical burns or skin irritation. (Source: U.S. EPA) We wear gloves, eye protection and a mask, and we sweep and bag deck ash instead of hosing or blowing it around, as LA County Public Health advises.

After the 2025 fires, abandoned water became the bigger problem. The L.A. Pools Study, a university research team, estimated about 2,700 pools were affected in the Eaton Fire area alone. (Source: L.A. Pools Study) Working from aerial imagery, the San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District set out to finish mosquito treatments at 1,475 non-functional pools in the burn area by the end of June 2025. Ash and Debris Cleanup Options Compared

OptionBest forTrade-offs
Clean and rebalance in placeWind debris or light ashSeveral filter cleanings; more ash may blow in
Clean, super-chlorinate and clarifyHeavy ash near a fire, home undamagedPHTA suggests super-chlorinating to 20 ppm or using a chlorine-free oxidizer (Source: PHTA); no swimming until levels drop
Drain and refillSoot, burned debris or firefighting residueUses a full pool of water and must follow local discharge rules

For drained fire-area pools, LA Sanitation's pool drainage protocol, issued for the Palisades fire area, sends water to the home's sewer cleanout, never the driveway, gutter or storm drain, and bars draining within 24 hours before forecast rain or 48 hours after it ends. (Source: LA Sanitation) It is fire-area guidance, not a citywide permit rule, so we confirm the rule for your address first. Our pool drain and refill page covers the rest.

What Affects the Cost of Ash and Debris Cleanup

  • How much ash, soot or debris is in the water and on the deck
  • Pool and spa size
  • Filter type and how many cleanings the load requires
  • Any equipment damage from heat, ash or wind
  • Whether the water can be saved or needs draining
  • Follow-up visits while ash keeps arriving

Pool Ash and Debris Cleanup in Los Angeles: Local Factors

Scripps researchers counted an average of about 32 Santa Ana wind events a year across Southern California, in a season running October to April that peaks in December. (Source: Scripps, via NOAA) Those winds strip eucalyptus, sycamore and palm trees into foothill pools and carry smoke and ash far from any fire line, and winter storms then wash mud off bare hillsides. Why choose us

Why LA Homeowners Choose Us for Ash and Debris Cleanup

7 days a week

Open When the Wind Dies Down

Ash and wind debris do not wait for a weekday. We are open 7 days a week, 6 AM to 10 PM, so you can call on a Sunday morning after a Santa Ana night and get on the schedule. Early cleanup matters: the longer ash sits in the water, the more it dissolves into your chemistry and packs into the filter.

1 company for everything

Cleanup and Equipment Repair Together

Ash and storm debris rarely stop at the water. They jam pump baskets, strain motors, crack cleaner parts and choke filters. Because we are licensed and insured for pool equipment work, our owner cleans the pool and can also replace a failed pump seal, a cracked filter valve or a broken cleaner part, so you are not left hunting for a second company.

6 readings by text

Proof the Chemistry Came Back

Ash pushes pH up and knocks chlorine down, so the numbers matter more than the color. After each visit we text a photo and six readings, including free chlorine, pH and alkalinity. You can watch the water return to the reopening range LA County Public Health sets for fire-affected pools, and know when it is safe for the family to swim again.

FAQ

Pool Ash and Debris Cleanup FAQ

Should I run my pool pump when ash is in the water?

Check the baskets and filter pressure first, and on a fire-damaged property leave the breakers off until the fire department says the power is safe. Pulling heavy ash straight into a filter can blind it quickly.

Do I have to drain my pool after a wildfire?

Not always. Pools that caught mostly airborne ash can usually be cleaned and rebalanced. Pools with soot, burned debris or firefighting residue are often better drained, following the discharge rules for your area.

Firefighters pumped water from my pool. What now?

Check the level before the pump runs, since a pump running without water can ruin its seal. We inspect the equipment, clean the pool, refill it and restart the chemistry.

Do you handle storm cleanups too?

Yes. Winter storms wash mud, leaves and fertilizer from slopes and planters into pools. We remove the debris, clean the filter, test phosphates and rebalance the water.
