Pool tile cleaning in Los Angeles is mostly a fight against calcium: the white or gray crust that forms along the waterline, on spillways and around the spa edge. It starts as a film you can rub off with a thumb and ends as a rock-hard band no brush will touch. We remove it with the gentlest method that works on your tile, then correct the chemistry that put it there.
Scale is dissolved mineral left behind as water evaporates and as pH and temperature rise. An uncovered 500-square-foot pool can lose 12,000 to 31,000 gallons a year to evaporation, and every top-off from the hose brings in more minerals. (Source: U.S. EPA WaterSense)
What's Included in Tile and Calcium Cleaning
- Scale identification. A spot test tells calcium carbonate from calcium silicate, which need different tools.
- The full tile band. Waterline tile, step trim, spa spillways and raised water features.
- A method matched to your tile. Ceramic, porcelain, glass and stone tolerate different abrasives and chemicals.
- Cleanup and chemistry reset. Scale, media and residue removed, then pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness rebalanced.
We clean tile; we do not set, regrout or replace it, and we photograph any cracked or loose pieces we find. As an owner-operated pool company, Pool Cleaning Los Angeles sends the same person who inspects your tile to clean it.
Calcium Carbonate vs. Calcium Silicate Scale
Calcium carbonate is the common type: white, chalky or flaky, and it fizzes under a drop of diluted acid. Caught early, it comes off with pumice, a tile brush or a mild descaler.
Calcium silicate builds slowly, often beneath carbonate left for years, as calcium combines with silica. It is grayish and almost glassy, barely reacts to acid, and resists hand tools. This is the scale that usually calls for bead blasting, and many older pools have both types layered together.

Call (877) 720-8124Signs Your Pool Tile Needs Calcium Cleaning
- A white or gray band that weekly brushing no longer removes.
- Tile that feels like fine sandpaper under your hand.
- Crusty trails down a spa spillway or fountain.
- Dull, cloudy-looking tile above crystal-clear water.
- White flakes on the salt cell, a sign the water itself is scaling.
Our Pool Tile Cleaning Process
- Inspect and spot-testWe identify the tile material and test whether the scale is carbonate, silicate or both.
- Test the waterpH, alkalinity and calcium hardness go on record before we treat the symptom.
- Choose the methodWe explain which method fits your tile and scale, and why.
- Remove the scaleWe work the full waterline and features, lowering the water first when the method needs dry tile.
- Clean up and rebalanceFragments and media come out of the pool and filter, the water returns to level and the chemistry is corrected.
Tile Cleaning Methods Compared
| Method | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Hand scrubbing with pumice or a tile stone | Light carbonate scale on ceramic or porcelain; touch-ups | Slow on heavy buildup; can scratch glass tile and glossy glazes |
| Chemical descalers | Thin to moderate carbonate scale and grout lines | Little effect on silicate; must be kept off plaster and followed by a pH correction |
| Bead blasting | Heavy or old scale, calcium silicate, long waterlines | Water must be lowered below the tile; glass and soft stone need gentler media |
Bead blasting cleans; it does not resurface. Fine media breaks the mineral away under controlled pressure while the glaze stays intact. If the plaster below your tile is stained too, an acid wash is the separate tool for that.
Keeping Calcium Off Your Tile
Pentair's salt system manual cites an ideal calcium hardness range of 200 to 400 ppm for pools. (Source: Pentair) Calcium is only part of it: Hayward's saturation index combines pH, temperature, calcium and alkalinity, and says scaling and staining will occur once the index rises above +0.2. (Source: Hayward) That is why the same water can scale in August but not in March.
Our weekly pool cleaning brushes the tile line while deposits are still soft, and our pool chemical service holds pH and alkalinity out of the scaling zone. When calcium climbs too high for chemistry alone, a partial drain and refill fixes it.
What Affects the Cost of Pool Tile Cleaning
- Length of the tile line, including any attached spa.
- Type and age of the scale. Thick silicate takes far longer than thin carbonate.
- The method. Bead blasting adds lowering the water, media and cleanup.
- Tile material and extras. Glass, stone, spillways and fountains need slower work.

Pool Tile Cleaning in Los Angeles: Local Factors
For pool tile cleaning in Los Angeles, the biggest variable is who supplies your water. In 2025, LADWP water averaged about 103 to 140 mg/L of hardness in the San Fernando Valley and Western LA, but up to about 236 mg/L in the Harbor and Eastern LA areas. (Source: LADWP) Burbank averaged 286 ppm (Source: Burbank Water and Power) and Santa Clarita's local groundwater 354 mg/L. (Source: SCV Water) On California Water Service's scale, 150 to 300 ppm is hard and 300 or more is very hard. (Source: Cal Water)
